Over the past few days, travelling from Naples to Sorrento and then from Amalfi to Salerno via Paestum and other places, we’ve eaten at no fewer than 15 restaurants. Mimi in Potenza was by far the best experience we’ve had so far; we simply stumbled upon it by chance, relying purely on luck. As it is a very traditional, old-fashioned family-run restaurant, there was no menu, so we left the choice entirely up to them. The chef was an elderly gentleman with a head of silver hair, and the waiter was a very friendly chap who tried his best to communicate with us in English. We mentioned that we’d already had plenty of cheese that day, so he very thoughtfully served us a small platter of cheese, mushrooms, vegetables and ham—perfect for three people. The portion was just right and it was absolutely delicious. The speciality fried chillies weren’t spicy at all; they were fresh and crispy, very similar to the crispy chillies found in Chinese cuisine. Following the starters, we were served handmade pasta Orecchiette: one dish stir-fried with garlic and mushrooms, and the other with tomato sauce and breadcrumbs. I’d also like to give a shout-out to their chilli oil—very spicy that it’s exactly to my taste. For the second main course, we really couldn’t eat any more, so the chef prepared a tender, flame-grilled lamb dish. After happily sharing that, we ordered a homemade fruit and cream cake, which, to our delight, wasn’t too sweet at all – brilliant! We absolutely loved this restaurant and hope it stays open for a long time to come. We wish the chef and his family the very best of health. Torneremo!
